According to shop owner Michael Pierce, first-timers visiting Cloud Chief & Co. in downtown Tomball can expect a museum-like shopping experience.

“We want [customers] to be inspired; we want them to get ideas; we want them to have fun and feel like they’re on a vacation or that they’re at a destination [point],” said Pierce, who owns the store with his wife, Dion.

Cloud Chief & Co. opened in January 2019 on West Main Street and offers an American Southwestern-style selection of items, including clothing, jewelry and home decor as well as brands such as Pendleton and H Bar C.

In addition to the old-fashioned children’s toys and knick-knacks, customers can also find unique treasures within the store, such as fossils and apothecary jars.

“We want you to feel like you’ve stepped back in time, but yet, everything is brand new,” Pierce said. “It’s not an antique store; … it’s a brand-new shop that just feels like you’re in another time.”

Pierce said one of his favorite things about running the shop is meeting new people and hearing their stories.

“I meet so many people from Tomball and all around the world, but everyone that comes in, because of the nature of the store, … everything reminds them of something, and so you get a lot of stories from people,” Pierce said.

In addition to its merchandise, Cloud Chief & Co. also hosts weekly community events. On Saturdays at 7 p.m., customers can hang out in the shop, listen to live music and catch a game of chess.

“There’s a lot of really cool artists in town; there’s a lot of very cool musicians and shops, so [Tomball] definitely is growing and has so much potential,” Pierce said. “We all kind of communicate and try to keep everything going, so it’s definitely a growing scene of art, music, boutiques and things like that.”

Although the store’s plans to host more community events lost some momentum during the coronavirus pandemic, Pierce said he believes the store will continue to attract customers.

“We haven’t even begun to do the things we want to do with this space,” he said. “That’s what’s really inspiring for me is that we have so much more to do, and people love it already.”
