Fashion mistakes that make you look older
Fashion mistakes that make you look older
We all like to look trendy and beautiful, but as we age we tend to get used to wearing certain things and experiment less. Maybe that skirt you loved in your 20s doesn’t suit you anymore, but equally, the jeans you wear now make you look older than you actually are. In this gallery, we go through some of the most common mistakes we all make that make us look older.

Wearing baggy clothes
While there is nothing wrong with a loose summer dress, most baggy clothes will not make you look great. Opt for more tailored pieces.
Wearing tight clothes
The opposite is also true. Young people might be able to pull it off, but when you’re older you just look like you’re trying too hard to fit in (excuse the pun).
Wearing old clothes
We know, fashion is cyclical, and your “vintage” clothes will make a return eventually. But maybe the ones you’re wearing now haven’t yet, and maybe you just don’t look as retro chic as you think.
Being a fashion victim
The opposite is also true. While there is nothing wring with keeping on top of trends, dressing like a 16-year-old won’t make you look any younger.
Matching everything
There is an art to matching clothes and accessories. For instance, excessively matching pieces, like your shoes, bag, hat, and belt, might be a bit too much. In summary, doing it excessively might not have the desired effect.
Using frumpy footwear
Footwear is really important and there really is no excuse for wearing dowdy shoes. Nowadays you can even get stylish orthopedic shoes!
Wearing old-fashioned tights
You know, like the ones pictured. You might be able to pull it off with a formal outfit, but in general they’ll just make you look older.
Not wearing the right bra
A poorly fitted bra not only is uncomfortable, but it can also ruin your style. Maybe it’s time to get your measures right and buy a nice bra.
Wearing monochrome
As we age, we tend to become a bit more dull when it comes to colors. Monochrome can be great, but going full white all the time, for instance, won’t do your style any favors.
Wearing mom jeans
Yes, they’re back in fashion. But, they’re not exactly like the ones moms used to wear in the ’80s. There are subtle differences in the way they shape your legs and waist, for instance.
Wearing too much pastel
Pastel colors can be great, but don’t overdo them. Don’t go full pastel, head-to-toe, all the time. Experiment with bolder colors too.
Using too many “conservative” fashion elements
You know, the suit, the glasses, the hair, the minimal jewelry. If you put it all together, you’ll definitely look older!
Covering up excessively
You can look great with a look like this, but don’t be afraid to show some skin.
Wearing outdated eyeglasses
Many people go years without updating their glasses. If this is you, maybe it’s time to look for a more up-to-date design?
Wearing frameless glasses
A monocle would probably look better than cheap frameless reading glasses.
Not taking risks
You can still find lots of fun pieces you can wear that won’t make you look like you’re trying too hard to look young.
Wearing too much jewelry
Over-accessorizing is also a mistake. It’s all about balance. If you can hear your jewelry as you walk, that’s a sign right there that you’re overdoing it.
Wearing elastic waist pants
We get it–they’re really comfy! But you have to be careful about the cut. Many of them will just make you look like a sack of potatoes.
Taking the bohemian style to an extreme
Overdoing the hippie chic style might make you look like an old fortuneteller.
Wearing too much animal print
If you should wear animal prints at all is up for debate. But if you do, please, please do not mix and match. Also, going leopard head-to-toe might not be as fashionable as you think.
Not embracing new trends
Having said that, you should not be afraid of prints in general. And, of course, keeping an eye on new trends. Not everything will work, but surely some will.
Not embracing your sexy self
Growing older doesn’t mean losing your sex appeal. Be confident, embrace your body, and don’t be afraid to be sexy.
Wearing cheap fabrics
We get it, fast fashion can be very tempting, but quality fabrics make such a big difference.
Wearing brooches with everything
Brooches can really make a blazer or a similar piece shine. But please, don’t wear them all the time with all sorts of clothes. Only Queen Elizabeth II probably does that!
Not knowing what colors look better on you
Look in the mirror. Look at your complexion, your hair, the color of your eyes. Do you know which colors to wear?
Only wearing old-fashioned pieces
Sure, some pieces are basics, and we ought to have them in our wardrobe. But if all you wear is “age-appropriate” basics, then where is the fun in that?
Wearing two-piece dresses
The two-piece dress can be very nice indeed, but elegance comes at a price. When was the last time you saw a young woman wearing one of these?
When you can see your socks
Hipster kids might be able to pull this off, but if you’re older, you’ll just look weird.
Not paying attention to midi lengths
This is very important. Too long and it can make you look like an old woman from the 1960s.
Buying clothes that don’t excite you
It’s okay to dress appropriately for your age (whatever that means), but you must also be able to have a bit of fun and own pieces you’re genuinely excited to wear. Otherwise, what’s the point?
