Shopping hack at Zara deciphers whether the clothes run true to size, a bit smaller or a bit bigger

Two fashionistas claim they have uncovered a secret tagging system at Zara that will help you choose what size to try on in the changeroom.

The British sisters behind the TikTok handle @WearHerStyle shared a video of themselves in their favourite Zara store after struggling to decipher their perfect size at the global fashion chain. 

‘Girls, did you know this Zara hack?’ the sisters asked in the clip, pointing to the ‘code’ printed on the manufactured tags around the collar. 

The ladies compared the tags on three separate items to showcase how a ‘square’, ‘circle’ and ‘triangle’ shape could help women decide on their ideal fit.

On one pink tweed jacket, the tag had a small square next to the size, which in this case was ‘S’ for small.

According to the label-loving siblings the square means the piece runs true to size and you can get your regular fit.

If there is a little triangle on the size label it indicates the garment runs smaller than usual so you’ll need to size up by one.

And finally if the piece has a little circle on the tag it means the clothing runs bigger than the average size and you might be able to size down.

While the secret ‘code’ would be useful Zara has previously taken to the internet to confirm that these markings simply indicate where the garment should be hung up in the store.

However a Zara employee confirmed that the hack does work as well and does correlate to sizing, it’s just more of an accident than a choice made by the company.

‘I work at Zara and while the symbols are used to differentiate the three different collections, I’ve noticed that the sizing works like this too!’ She said.

Another woman said a cashier at her local store explained the meaning behind the shapes, which is particularly helpful when shopping for pants.

‘The cashier at Zara was nice to explain that to me after a return,’ she wrote. ‘The triangle is mostly found on pants. It means it might get tighter from top to bottom. And the square is basically straight fit or regular fit.’

A woman on Twitter who tested it out for herself gave her final thoughts in a viral post. 

‘Triangle = runs smaller so always go a size up. I always go up for short dresses/shorts. Circle = runs bigger. I always buy my Zara size (M) when it’s their tops, and yes this slightly bigger,’ she said.

She added: ‘Square = True to size.’
